Man Who Fell Asleep Next To His Rape Victim Gets 15-Years Jail Sentence

A 19-year-old man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison by the Free State High Court sitting in Sasolburg after being found guilty of raping a 21-year-old physically challenged woman in 2021. The court heard how Tshepo Lethebe attacked the victim in her home before dragging her to his residence, where he committed the assault.

Police spokesperson Sgt. Sinah Mpakane detailed the events, explaining that on February 7, 2021, Lethebe entered the victim's house without saying a word, grabbed her by the hand, and forced her to his home. After raping her, Lethebe fell asleep next to the victim. The victim managed to get up, dress herself, and seek help.

Lethebe was arrested the same day by Sgt. Sara Maleka from the Mafube Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit. He remained in custody throughout the trial until his sentencing this week.

Sgt. Mpakane praised the tireless efforts of Sgt. Maleka and prosecutor Mthetwa, who worked diligently to ensure that Lethebe was brought to justice. She emphasized that the sentence serves as a strong message that the abuse of women and children will not be tolerated.
